Who Served Our Country.

Archie Mays joined the National Guard in 1938. He was called for active
duty in 1940. He was sent back home before the war started, but a man he
knew from the guard told him he'd be an ideal candidate for the "new
officer candidate school" that the Army was forming. He was in the 4th
OCS class, and became a 2nd Lt at 21 (he had previously worked his way
up to Tech Sgt as an enlisted man). By the time he was 22, he was a
Captain. At 24 he got a battlefield promotion to Major. In 1949, he
transferred to the Air Force (in spite of the newspaper's assertions,
he's not a retired Army General, he's a retired Air Force General). At
33, he became a full bird Colonel, and was promoted to Brigadier General
when he was 47.

All of his Commissioned Officer duty was as a combat engineer and a
post engineer.

He served combat duty with the 160th Engineer Battalion during WWII.
During the Korean War he was a base civil engineer, and in Vietnam he
was responsible for all Air Force civil engineering functions in the country.

He retired in 1973.
I can also tell you, he's anxious to share "war stories" with people
that will listen. I think his stories are worth hearing, and worth retelling.
