Mr. Keene was a retiree of the United States Air Force with over 30 years of
service and was in the Army at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He is
credited with shooting down the first enemy jet aircraft in combat (from his P-51)
and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross among other awards. He was a
surveyor/engineer after his career in the military. Other than a small
funeral home visitation, which has already been held, the service at DFW
National Cemetery will be the only service. His ashes will be buried at the same
time as those of his wife, who passed away earlier this year.
The cemetery would not release which shelter the service is scheduled for so
please either check the information board outside at the visitor center when
you arrive or just look for the other bikes in the shelter area. Big flag
bikes please come initially to the staging area for briefing and then you will
go to the visitor center to escort the family to the shelter. Others will
stay to help with the flags. We will use the flags we have in storage at the
cemetery for this service. We will have a water truck present.
Mountain Creek Parkway is now open from I-20 to the cemetery but the road
is rough and construction is ongoing as it nears Keist. The best route is
likely still to be Spur 408 to Keist to Mountain Creek and then to the
cemetery.
Also please note that other services may be in progress as we are entering
or leaving the area so please keep bike pipe/radio/etc., noise to a minimum.
Thanks.
Weather: Clear with a high of 83 degrees. As always, one of the keys to
proper hydration is to start hydrating early. The day prior to the mission is
not too soon to start. It is, in fact, recommended by the experts.
Iron Horses if you can, cages are always welcome and appreciated.
Please remember that our mission is to stand tall, silent, and with honor
and respect for this veteran and his family.
Respectfully Submitted,
Steve “Badger” Lucas
North Texas Ride Captain
