Sgt. Durbin was on active duty in a combat zone in Iraq at the time of his
death. He had already done a tour of duty in the Marine Corps and had joined
the Army for another tour to experience that branch of service. It has been
reported that he was present at a meeting with his squad leader and another
Sergeant, who had been called in to discuss his performance, when the third
Sergeant opened fire during the meeting, killing Sgt. Durbin and squad leader,
Staff Sgt. Darris Dawson of Florida. Sgt. Durbin is survived by his wife and
8 year old step-daughter and his parents.
Part 1: Airport Escort: Sunday, September 21, 2008 – 10:13 AM
Staging at DFW Airport General Aviation Terminal - 9:30 AM – 9:45 AM;
Briefing – 9:45 AM.
Directions – The General Aviation Terminal is on the West side of DFW
airport, just South of Terminal D, the International Terminal.
>From the North – Travel Southbound on the Service Road (not the toll road)
past the International Terminal, past crossover #5, and under the two
overpasses where the airplanes cross from one side of the airport to the other.
Immediately on your right, you will turn right and make what is essentially a
right hand U-turn onto a road that takes you back to the North. It curves to
the West (left) and takes you to the General Aviation terminal on your left.
We will stage there.
>From the South – Travel Northbound on the Service Road (not the toll road)
and use the #5 crossover to put you on the Southbound Service Road. You will
then go under the two overpasses described above and proceed.
Following the staging and arrival we will escort Sgt. Durbin to Restland
cemetery (see location information below).

Part 4: Escort and Interment Service: Tuesday, September 23, 2008 - 3:30
PM, DFW National Cemetery
We will participate in the funeral procession from the church (see location
information above) to DFW national cemetery for the interment service. Due
to the times of the funeral service and the interment service there will be
some break between the funeral and the time we depart for the cemetery. We DO
NOT know how long this break will be at this time or the exact time we will
be leaving for the cemetery. Be prepared for anything and ready to be
flexible regarding eating lunch. The safest thing is to bring your lunch with you,
of course. Hopefully we will be able to provide everyone with an update
prior to Tuesday.
Staging at the cemetery below the shelter area upon arrival for briefing.
We do not know which shelter will be used at this time. Big flag bikes will
remain with the procession at the visitor center to escort the procession to
the shelter area. Those not participating in the escort please plan to
arrive no later than 3:00 PM and check at the visitor center to determine which
shelter will be used. Please then park in our usual place on the roadway below
the shelter. We will use flags stored at that shelter and additional flags
that will be brought by the flag truck. The flag line will be put in place as
soon as possible prior to the ceremony.

Weather: Forecast for Sunday is for mostly clear and a high of 90 degrees.
Forecast for Monday and Tuesday is for partly cloudy with a high of 91
degrees. Please keep an eye on this as we all know how the weather loves to
change without notice. Even though it’s September please remember about the
importance of proper hydration. The experts tell us that starting to hydrate the
night before is one of the best ways to prevent problems the next day and
remember that sport drinks like Gatorade are helpful in addition to water in
replacing fluids lost through perspiration.
Iron Horses if you can, cages are always welcome and appreciated. The
support truck with flags and water will be at each location.
Please remember that our mission is to stand tall, silent, and with honor
and respect for this soldier and his family.
Respectfully submitted,
Steve “Badger” Lucas
North Texas Ride Captain
