Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today we received a message from Rita Maddux, Gary's widow. I thought I'd
share it with you. It will also be on our web site for you to refer to.
The text is below.
Steve Lucas
Deputy State Captain
North Texas PGR
I cannot begin to express my heartfelt thanks for the PGR's participation at
Gary's funeral. I have a pretty good vocabulary, but in this case, mere
words do not come close to the gratitude I feel in my heart for the PGR. All
those present were a source of peace and comfort for me. I sincerely enjoyed
meeting members who knew Gary and had become friends with him. Knowing that
he had so many PGR friends makes me feel like I still have a piece of Gary
with me. Every time I see a PGR member who knew Gary, I know that person
knew Gary and therefore, I have a instant bond with that person and will now
consider them to be my friend as well.
As for the procession...I have only one word...WOW!!!! It was absolutely
stunning!!! Never in my wildest dreams, could I imagine such a spectacular
send-off for Gary. What a tribute! I am a veteran myself and I understand
the bond that vets and military have for one another. I saw it first-hand at
Gary's funeral and at the cemetery. I was in such awe, I must confess, I
couldn't even cry. I was so proud of Gary and all of you who were there to
honor him!!!!
Please let Mr. Ballard, the Medal of Honor recipient, know that his
presentation of the autographed book, Medal of Honor-Portraits Of Valor
Beyond The Call Of Duty, will be treasured and honored in my home. This man
who Gary honored on his last mission trip for Mr. Ballard's valor, took the
time to remember Gary is just mind-boggling! I am truly honored and humbled
by his kindness!!!
It is my desire to become more involved in the PGR to carry on Gary's
passion to honor veterans and their families. The PGR had become Gary's
God-send ministry and now it has become mine. Please let me know in what
capacity I can help. I will do my best to honor your request!!
Once again, please accept my thanks for being a part of Gary's final
mission...his funeral. It was an experience I will never, ever forget. I am
still receiving comments on just how spectacular it was. It will remain in
my heart for my lifetime.
God Bless and please know that the Lord rides with all of you!
Sincerely,
Rita Maddux
