Ladies and Gentlemen,
For those of you who were not able to join in on the escort bringing in the
busses carrying elements of the 2-149th this past weekend (and missing that
lovely monsoon we rode through) you have a second chance! The rest of the
unit is coming in this Saturday, May 30, 2009! We have been asked once
again by the Unit Commander to bring the rest of the unit back to Texas soil
and all the way home.
Last Saturday as the first busses were approaching Alvord, the second flight
was just entering US airspace. They are now at Fort Sill and beginning
their processing to come home. Captain Stillinger was able to give us more
notice this time since the entire unit is now in the US and the security of
the troop movement is less critical. As far as we know at this time, the
time frame for their arrival in Alvord will be the same as last week but we
will be able to confirm that as time grows nearer.
I know that Randy will cover this in his mission report, but we weren't sure
if the soldiers were going to get off of the busses when they stopped to
pick us up or if they would only stop long enough for us to mount up and get
on the road in Alvord. Well, the soldiers came off of the busses and
touched Texas soil for the first time since leaving the armory on the way to
Iraq and we were there to welcome them to Texas. Handshakes and hugs, and
lots of smiles - and some tears - were exchanged and it was really special.
I don't know if they'll get off of the bus or not this time, but it sure is
worth the trip to go and get them and bring them home, in my opinion.
A final itinerary will be forthcoming as soon as all the details are
finalized and with a little time to plan we're hoping to set up a couple of
surprises for them to see along the way. The troops sure are glad to see
friendly faces from back home so try and put this on your calendar if you
can.
Thank you all for everything you do.
Steve Lucas
Deputy State Captain
