Medal of Honor winner killed in bike crash
We now have only 97 living recipients
A Milton man who received the Medal of Honor for his service in Vietnam died after a motorcycle
crash as he was leaving a veterans’ club Sunday.
Leonard “Len” Keller, 62, died at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola following a crash outside the Fleet Reserve
Association in Milton Sunday afternoon.
Keller received the Medal of Honor in 1968 in a White House ceremony with President Lyndon Johnson
for “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty,”
according to his medal citation.
The medal recognized an event in 1967 in Vietnam in which Keller, an Army sergeant, and a fellow soldier came under
fire from multiple sources.
“Sgt. Keller quickly moved to a position where he could fire at a bunker from which automatic fire was received,
killing one Viet Cong who attempted to escape,” according to the citation. He went on to kill several attacking
enemies.
“Leaping to the top of a dike, he and a comrade charged the enemy bunkers, dangerously exposing themselves to the
enemy fire,” according to the citation. “His acts were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military
service and reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.”
The Medal of Honor is the nation’s highest military honor. It is awarded by Congress for risk of life in combat
beyond the call of duty.
